Why was this breed of dog developed; what was it originally bred to do?
In 1899 in Karlsruhe, Germany, Captain Max von Stephanitz and others, developed the German Shepherd. The breed was created by selective breeding.
Its original function was to herd, and work. However it has since been successfully used in search and rescue, tracking, as a Seeing Eye dog, a guard dog, used in drug detection, and most certainly as a companion, pet, and show dog.
